Michael Jackson would enter the stage and he would
stand completely still… for up to 2 minutes.
The crowd would go absolutely bananas!
Why?
Why didn’t he just come on to the stage singing right away?
It’s the same reason the best public speakers do the same thing.
If I told you to stand in front of the audience and say nothing,
You would think:
“What do you mean saying nothing?
If I don’t say something,
People will lose interest,
They’ll think I’m incompetent!”
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Public speakers like Barrack Obama, Les Brown, Simon Sinek,
One thing they all do right before they start talking,
Is that they walk on stage and for a few moments.
…. they say nothing.
They look around at the audience.
They wait for the applause to die down.
They stand in silence,
Once they command the audience’s attention,
It is only then they speak.
Why do they do this?
Because silence creates anticipation.
Anticipation creates interest.
Interest creates attention.
Attention is exactly what you want when you start.
Moreover,
It also allows the speaker to relax,
Control their posture and their composure,
And appear significantly more confident.
Here’s a live example of how big of a difference this can make:
